of Roanoke rescue operation opens a special thrift shop for people who are homeless or in need, and gives them money to spend there.
The store is located across the street from the Mission at 402 Fourth St SE. It is open only to individuals in need, Mission spokesman Kevin Berry said.
What's special is that this mission provides users with a card with funds that can be spent at a store that sells a variety of clothing items, from everyday wear to interview-friendly attire. Cards are available at the mission front desk.
“If you’re having trouble, let us know,” Berry said. “Essentially the money is uploaded to the card.”
Rescue Mission operates two thrift stores for the public. They are Thrift 460 at 3425 Orange Ave. NE and 2nd Helpings at 1502 Williamson Road NE.

Planning for self-storage center
Developer Alexander Boone is proposing to open a business park next to Interstate 81, with a self-storage center as the first project.
The Roanoke County Planning Commission has scheduled a meeting for May 7 to discuss the submitted plans. A. Boone Real Estate.
The proposed name, Edgebrook Park, is located in Roanoke, adjacent to Interstate 81 and Thompson Memorial Highway and adjacent to a well-traveled Virginia Department of Transportation park-and-ride facility. It will be a “new commercial community at the gateway to the western part of the county,” the application states.
If approved, the application would change the land use designation of approximately 20 acres from medium-density multifamily residential to high-intensity commercial. Mr. Boone will agree in advance to limit commercial development to a limited number of business types, including offices, medical or veterinary clinics, consumer services, and restaurants, but not restaurants with drive-through service. .
