Most business credit card applications require a Social Security number or individual tax identification number. Corporate cards are an exception. If you only want to use your Employer Identification Number (EIN) when purchasing business cards, a business card may be the best option for you.

However, depending on why you want to get an EIN-specific business card, this may not be your only option.

Want to separate your work and personal money? All business credit cards can be useful if used properly. The same applies when establishing business credit for a new EIN. Also, if you're unsure of your eligibility, a secured card or a card that only pulls soft credit may also make sense.

Learn more about EIN-only business cards, how to get them, and other options that may be right for your business.

However, financial technology companies are now offering corporate cards with less stringent eligibility requirements. Some of the best options for these EIN-only cards include:

Why can't I get a business credit card using just my EIN?

Most small business cards require the applicant to personally guarantee the debt on the card. This means that even if your business goes bankrupt, you are still responsible for repaying the debt.

Card issuers use your personal credit score as a basis for approval and use your SSN or ITIN to verify your personal creditworthiness, even if you also provide an EIN. Many small business cards require good or excellent personal credit (usually a FICO score of at least 690).

Will EIN-only cards affect my personal credit?

Using your business's Employer Identification Number (EIN) when applying for a business credit card is a smart move for a variety of reasons. First, an EIN helps you draw a clear line between your professional and personal expenses. It is also essential for establishing a business credit history.
But if you're looking for an EIN-only business credit card to protect your personal credit, don't worry. Business credit card activity generally doesn't affect your personal credit score unless your account is seriously delinquent.
However, there are some exceptions. For example, Capital One offers most business credit cards (

Capital One Spark Cash Plus

and

Capital One Venture X Business

is an exception). The effect can be positive or negative. If you pay on time and have a low credit utilization ratio (ideally less than 30%), the account can improve your personal credit score. However, if you miss payments and end up with a large amount of debt, your score can suffer.

Your personal guarantee will still apply regardless of whether your small business card is reported to the credit bureaus. If the company goes out of business, you are responsible for repaying the card.
