The small business credit card from UBS, an investment bank that caters to high-net-worth individuals, is a good deal, but only for those who can take advantage of premium fringe benefits. The three cards offer potentially valuable perks, including: rental car insurance and civil aviation perks. However, the ongoing benefits aren't as impressive compared to other small business cards with similar annual fees.

Let's take a closer look at what these three UBS business credit cards have to offer.

1. Cashback cards consistently offer the best perks

The UBS small business card portfolio includes two travel cards and one cashback card.

  • of UBS Visa signature business cardthe travel card has a $0 annual fee and earns 1 UBS My Choice Rewards point per dollar spent on all purchases.

  • of UBS Cash Rewards Visa Business Cardthe cashback card has an annual fee of $150 and earns 2% cash back on the first $100,000 of eligible purchases each year and 1% cash back on all subsequent purchases.

  • of UBS Visa Infinite Business Card, the Travel Card has an annual fee of $550 and earns 3 UBS My Choice Rewards points for every $1 you spend on air travel and hotel stays. 2 points for every dollar you spend on office supplies, shipping, advertising, cable, internet and phone on up to $200,000 in annual purchases. Earn 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.

All three cards offer payment management for authorized users, expense tracking tools, and up to 24 free employee cards upon request. Also, Major rental car coverage When renting for business, you'll receive rare and hard-to-find perks and private aviation benefits that include upgrades and discounts on select chartered private jets.

Of the three cards, the UBS Cash Rewards Visa Business Card has the most benefits. That means a flat 2% cash back on all purchases up to your spending limit. If you can take advantage of major car rental coverage and private aviation benefits, it can be a great deal.

2. Travel cards offer the most benefits

In addition to offering the same leading car rental coverage and private aviation benefits as the other cards, the UBS Visa Signature Card also has some great benefits per trip. No annual fee card, concierge services, luxury hotel benefits, great car rental rates, and more. For travelers looking for luxury perks without the price tag, the little perks can make up for it.

And of course, as you might expect, the card with the highest annual fee of the three, the $550 annual UBS Visa Infinite Business card, comes with a ton of benefits and luxury amenities. Highlights include a $500 annual statement credit toward Airport Club lounge membership, complimentary benefits. Priority Pass Select Membera $350 domestic ticket, and Global Entry or TSA pre-screening statement credit.

But oddly enough, considering the $150 annual fee, the mid-range UBS Cash Rewards Visa Business Card isn't all that appealing when it comes to perks. With this card, you get major car rental coverage, private aviation benefits, and some basic perks, but nothing more.

3. You may need to become a UBS client to get

UBS's small business cards aren't for everyone who lives in an attic. “UBS' card programs are designed to serve UBS customers and are sold exclusively to UBS customers,” a UBS representative said.

If you do not have an existing UBS relationship, you can apply for a card by contacting UBS directly by calling 866-UBS-VISA, but there is no online application.

4. Redemption rules can be complex and costly

First, the good news. If you have a UBS Visa Infinite Business card or a UBS Visa Signature card, you can earn UBS My Choice Rewards points with both. You can save even more by redeeming these points for flights. (The UBS Cash Rewards Visa Business is a cashback card, so it does not apply here.)

Redeem 25,000 points for a flight worth up to $350. Or you can redeem 50,000 points to get tickets worth up to $900. By these standards, points are worth 1.4 cents or 1.8 cents each, far more than the industry standard of 1 cent each.

Here's the bad news. To get a high redemption rate, you should only use points to cover the full cost of your ticket. You can also use a combination of points and cash, but you won't get a high return rate that way. So, if you want to take advantage of this deal, keep the following in mind:

  • If the ticket price is more than $350 or $900, you'll have to pay points for the difference. Again, cash or a combination of points and dollars cannot be used. The redemption value of that cost difference then returns to 1 cent per point.

  • To make matters worse, you can only pay the difference in increments of 5,000 points (which means $50 of the ticket price). So, for example, if you want a $458 flight ticket, you'll need 40,000 points. It takes 25,000 points to cover the first $350, and an additional 15,000 points to cover the difference of $108.

  • If you have a UBS Visa Signature card, you will also pay a $25 booking fee. (This fee does not apply to the UBS Visa Infinite Business card.)

The UBS Cash Rewards Visa Business Card is not eligible for this type of travel benefit. Receive either a statement credit or a deposit to your UBS Business account.

5. Larger accounts get bigger sign-up bonuses

Like most business credit cards, all UBS cards come with a welcome offer after you meet the minimum spend requirements.

However, holders of the UBS Visa Infinite Business Card and/or UBS Visa Signature Business Card can significantly increase these bonuses if they have assets of $250,000 or more as a customer. Please contact UBS for more information.
