L'Oréal and Watsons recently announced the launch of their first ever Green Collaborative Initiative in the Philippines to accelerate sustainability in the beauty and wellness sector. Together, L'Oréal and Watsons are creating programs that will help reduce plastic waste, raise awareness about sustainable choices, and provide livelihood opportunities for vulnerable populations in the Philippines.

“This first green joint venture in the Philippines marks a historic milestone in L'Oreal and Watsons' long-standing partnership in the Philippines. We are incredibly proud that together we are being a catalyst for change by going beyond responsible business practices, acting with urgency and contributing to solving the Philippines' most pressing environmental and social issues. Danilo Chong, The Managing Director of Watsons Philippines also voiced his support for the partnership: “At Watsons, we have updated our brand promise from 'Look Good, Feel Good' to 'Look Good, Do Good, Feel Good' to demonstrate our strong commitment to more sustainable practices. This first-of-its-kind green collaboration is a holistic approach to making a total impact on the planet, people and products. We are inspired by our work with L'Oreal and the positive impact we can drive in the Philippines, and hope programs like this will inspire other companies to do the right thing for the environment.”

Plastic pollution is a major challenge in the Philippines. In 2022, the Philippine government implemented the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) bill on the collection and management of post-consumer recycled plastics. In 2023, L'Oréal will collect, upcycle and recycle 100% of plastic in the Philippines, exceeding the 20% target set by the government in the first year of implementation.

With the Green Joint Venture Initiative, L'Oréal's sustainability program “L'Oréal for the Future” and Watsons' brand promise of “Look good, act good, feel good”,, We are accelerating our collective transformation towards business models that respect the planet's limits, strengthen business ecosystems, and strengthen our efforts to drive inclusive growth.

The joint collaboration programme includes:

  • of Recycle and earn rewards The program is led by Garnier, a brand of the L'Oreal Group. Consumers can donate their empty beauty and health-related bottles at select Watsons stores to receive discounts. The initiative will be launched on May 6 this year at 23 Watsons stores in Metro Manila.

  • To help consumers make sustainable choices, L’Oreal is expanding the list of products in Watsons’ “Sustainable Choice” category, Refillable and made from recycled materials and sustainable paper and They use ingredients that are bio-based, abundant or derived from circular processes. One example is Garnier's Micellar Water, which is made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) PET plastic (R-PET).The cartons used in L'Oreal's packaging are made from FSC-certified paper.

  • All POSM used by L'Oreal in Watsons stores is 100% eco-designThe company has adopted a 3R strategy to reduce the weight of its products and packaging by making them as small and lightweight as possible. In addition, L'Oréal aims to replace traditional materials with alternatives that have a lower environmental impact and are suitable for reuse and recycling.

  • Watsons is a L'Oreal Digital Beauty Academyis a social inclusion program that provides training in beauty, health and social commerce with the goal of equipping individuals with valuable skills to succeed and earn a living in the digital space.

  • L'Oreal backs Watsons Allergan Pancalsugan Medical and wellness programs aimed at improving the overall health of vulnerable communities. Allergan Pancalsugan The program is set to expand to Metro Manila, Palawan, Bacolod, Iloilo and Pampanga this year.

  • L'Oreal is upskilling its brand ambassadors and Watsons staff on sustainability and conscious consumption. L'Oreal for the Future e-Learning module.

As part of its “L'Oreal for the Future” initiative, L'Oreal is committed to using 100% recycled or bio-based plastics in its packaging by 2030. It is also committed to ensuring that 95% of its product ingredients come from bio-based sources, abundant minerals or circular processes by 2030. (PR)
