A new eatery in northeast Roanoke is serving ice cream, popsicles and colorful hot snacks of Mexican origin.
Sitting in pink booths surrounded by dazzling décor, you can munch on mango flowers, corn on the cob, mini pancakes, ramen noodles, and end with a dazzling, vibrant dessert. Anthojitos Dariza.
The Spanish word Antojitos means “little cravings” and refers to a menu of traditional snacks and appetizers customarily sold at street stalls and markets.
D'Aliza, the daughter of Maria Rodriguez and Julio Gonzalez, opened the store in D'Aliza's name after her child died of a brain disease at four days old. Her 2023 obituary lists the names of her six brothers, one sister, and 19 grandparents and great-grandparents.

The couple decorated the dining room in pink, from the plastic forks and spoons to the color of the walls, and installed a set of backlit angle wings front and center. We offer over 40 ice cream flavors and over 20 types of popsicles and ice cream bars.

This is not their first time in business. Rodriguez, 23, who was born in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, where she has lived for about three years, said she already runs a business called Quinas Picnics, which hosts fancy picnics. Gonzalez, 35, from Jalisco, Mexico, owns JC Construction, a residential and commercial builder. The Vinton couple hired staff to help run the new store, and the first few days were good.
Rodriguez said more than 100 customers poured in on the first day, and another 100 came in the next day. Rumors are spreading on social media that a new Mexican restaurant is opening. The menu is in Spanish.
“It was a little stressful because there were so many people and so many orders, but it was really worth it,” Rodriguez said, staring at the dirty pink doormat.
