The Digital Nomad Visa is for professionals who are already working remotely.
It took two years after Italy first announced its plans to issue digital nomad visas, but the visas have finally become a reality to much fanfare.
What is the Italian Digital Nomad Visa?
The Digital Nomad Visa is valid for one year and is available to professionals who are already working remotely. You don't have to be self-employed to qualify, and remote employees may also be eligible.
If you are well established in your field and have been working remotely using technology for some time, this visa could be a great way to establish yourself in Italy.
Benefits of the Digital Nomad Visa
Unlike other visas that many say are extremely difficult to obtain, such as the self-employed visa (though I happen to be one of the lucky few who have been approved for it), the requirements for a digital nomad visa are relatively few.
You will need to provide proof of an annual income of at least 28,000 euros, as well as a work contract or proof of virtual employment. You will also need proof of accommodation in Italy and tourist or international medical insurance with coverage of at least 30,000 euros per person per year.
Unlike other visas, you do not need to provide proof of an Italian bank account. Nuraostathis is a long-term entry permit.
Disadvantages of the Digital Nomad Visa
What's still to be determined about this visa is what the “highly skilled” requirements will be. You may be able to submit a college diploma, resume, or proof of experience to meet this requirement, but each consulate may take a different stance on what they're looking for.
And because the application process is new, there's no feedback yet on how easy it will be. With so many applicants and so little guidance on how to prove “advanced skills,” it remains to be seen whether this will be a surefire hit for anyone wanting to work and live remotely in Europe.
What you need to know about the Italian Digital Nomad Visa
The good news is that if you have family, you can bring them with you on this visa.
The Digital Nomad Visa is only valid for one year, but it is renewable. Once you arrive in Italy, you will need to apply for a residence permit. This includes: Sleep Permission (Residence Permit) and other residence documents.
You don't have to be self-employed to get a digital nomad visa – if you're an employee working remotely you may also qualify.
Something to consider: Because the visas were announced in March after a long wait, Italian consulates in the U.S. may be inundated with applications for the time being. Many people report that it's nearly impossible to secure an appointment at a consulate months in advance. If you're planning on getting a visa and moving to Italy within a specific time frame, you may need to be flexible given the popularity of the program.
Italy's new digital nomad visa could change the country's workforce. La Dolce Vita This visa could be just a small part of your hectic, frantic life in America and a gateway to a better life.
