This national initiative is a week of intensive activity to tackle corporate crime through prevention, information sharing, targeted enforcement and community engagement.
BIRA, which works with more than 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, said this week police, businesses and the public should focus on solutions as rising crime poses a serious threat to retailers. He said he would encourage cooperation.
Activities highlighted this week include high-visibility patrols, crime prevention training, information sharing, and apprehending violent criminals. The ShopKind campaign against retail violence will also be highlighted.
Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre said: “We strongly support this joint effort to tackle corporate crime through prevention, information sharing, targeted enforcement and community engagement. Independent retailers are hit hard by theft, fraud and violence. Urgent action is needed to protect our workers and keep our high streets vibrant.”
Recent research from the British Retail Consortium found a 27% increase in retail crime incidents over the past 12 months. Total customer losses due to theft now exceed £2.8 billion a year.
Many Bira members have reported a drop in foot traffic and sales due to safety concerns.
Mr Goodacre added: “A rise in crime is threatening the survival of independent shops and damaging the perception of our local high streets. We hope this national week of action will bring safety and security to the forefront. We hope we can raise awareness while bringing about improvements.”
During the week, BIRA is calling on independent retailers to contact local police to share information, request crime prevention guidance and help bring repeat offenders to justice. Citizens are also encouraged to show their support through the ShopKind initiative.
“To turn the tide, we need the cooperation of police, businesses and the public. By working together, we can ensure that shopping local is safe and welcoming for everyone,” Goodacre said. added.
