Newark, New Jersey, November 29, 2023 LONDON, Oct 23, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — This year marked a major milestone for students from South 17th Street School and Westside High School as they participated in the Annual Youth Business Plan Challenge, an entrepreneurial competition hosted by Young Entrepreneurz Solutions (YES) on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Founded by a former award-winning Rutgers University professor and veteran entrepreneur Ernest Ruffin Jr.YES' mission is to reach out to young people in grades 6 through 12 across the country. Virgin Islandsand Europe We support business and economic development and help businesses start up and grow.
The organization is dedicated to teaching middle and high school youth the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and economic development. Ruffin aims to provide underserved youth with the tools to succeed in business and create economic opportunity for themselves and their communities.

South 17th Street School 8Number Grader, Ruins Rahman, Maurice Sharpand Kaneisha Marablemade a notable debut as one of only two groups comprised of middle school students. Their participation in the competition not only showcased their exceptional talents, but also served as an exciting introduction to the world of entrepreneurship. The excitement and motivation generated by their participation was palpable, as they watched the Westside High School seniors advance through the competition, giving them a glimpse of what is possible. Their presentation was Ryder Heat Hot SauceStudents worked on business presentations in their entrepreneurship classes, which, along with partnering with the Newark Beth Israel Farmers Market for marketing and sales, played a key role in the students' success. Students were evaluated on their business plan, creativity, presentation, finances, flair and overall presentation execution.
Principal Cook expressed great pride and said, “There's nothing better than seeing our students compete and win against other students from all over the world!”
The Westside High School students' success was due to well-structured presentations, media coverage, and genuine community partnerships with local businesses. Their ability to strengthen and expand their “hot sauce” business demonstrated the practical application of the entrepreneurial skills learned in the classroom.
