Developers have demolished two buildings on Crystal Spring Avenue where a boutique hotel was planned, leaving empty space, raising questions about the project's progress.
Rudy van Thiel, the man behind the project, said material and labor costs, as well as interest rates, had increased significantly. Those factors, along with banks' reluctance to lend to hospitality projects during the pandemic, are obstacles, he said. Still, sounding cautiously optimistic, Van Thiel said he would release a positive update in the coming weeks.
“We, as individuals, have invested a lot of money into this project. I'm not a developer that's in a big hurry. We're doing it in a careful, well-thought-out way,” he said, adding, “That's what we intend to do.” Stated.

When asked about the status of the project, Assistant City Planning Administrator Brittany Gardner said: “Asbestos permits have been approved and finalized. Demolition permits have been approved and must be finalized. Comprehensive development plans for improvements to the entire site and building permits for new buildings are still under consideration.” .”
Van Thiel said the only step left before the development plan is approved and a building permit is issued is for the contractor to pay the deposit. Van Thiel is awaiting further developments in the case, which he expects to reveal in the coming weeks, before giving the green light, he said.
“Like all of our neighbors, we're looking forward to our first drink, our first meal, and our first night there,” he says.
