The world faces three major challenges: the climate emergency, the loss of nature, and rising inequality. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that these challenges are interconnected and that our systems are ill-prepared for shocks. As global risks continue to rise, business leaders are taking a bold and urgent approach to action developed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), a CEO-led organization of more than 200 leading companies. They are rallying behind a change agenda.
Vision 2050: A Time for Change sets out a shared vision of a world where more than 9 billion people can live well within the boundaries of the planet by 2050. Achieving this vision will require major transformation, and businesses must focus on that transformation. Actions in areas where system change can be most effectively guided.
Vision 2050: A Time for Transformation shows how systems will transform and presents a new framework to guide business activities over the next decade. At the heart of this framework are nine transformation pathways (viable routes for companies to take) that cover areas of business activity that are essential to society. transportation and mobility. Living space. Products and materials. Financial products and services. Connectivity; Health and Well-Being. water and sanitation facilities; And the food.
Our vision and transformation path are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the goals of the Paris Agreement. Each of the nine transformation pathways includes 10 action areas for the next decade and is designed to help companies drive transformational change in strategy, business operations, and social impact.
To move beyond business as usual and accelerate the necessary transformation, business leaders must adopt three mindset shifts. Focus on building long-term resilience. We need to not only do no harm, but also take a regenerative approach.
Business can play a leading role, but it must work collaboratively with scientists, policy makers, financiers and investors, innovators and consumers to address and design systems change. Only an unprecedented level of cooperation can create the impact and speed needed for all people to live well within the planet's boundaries by 2050.
